They have finally released the trailer to James Cameron's new movie Avatar. This movie is getting incredible buzz and has me very excited already. I am a long time Cameron fan boy and have loved every movie he has made (yes, even Titanic) and can only imagine what he can do with the basically unlimited resources that he has available to him now.
After watching the trailer, I find myself a bit disappointed about the visuals. From the early reports, the computer imagery that is used in the movie is the most realistic ever created. It feels so real you will forget that you are watching an entirely created reality. The trailer did not have this feeling to me at all. It felt like a video game cut scene, albeit a very high quality video game cut scene. Everything looks fairly plastic and fake. This maybe an early render of the movie that is still a few layers of polish away from being complete or it may be that separated from the 3d technology that it is built around, it loses some magic, I do not know. But I was hoping for more in that area.
That being said, I loved everything else about the trailer. The design is top notch and feels very Cameron to me, which is a very good thing. I love his aesthetic. The story that is hinted at looks very emotional and moving, another of Cameron's hallmarks, and that makes me happy. I am a sucker for a emotional powerful story with good characters in it.
Overall, I am still super excited about this movie and cannot wait to go see it. Go check out the trailer and let me know what you think of it.
